Verdi Mill Pond can be a good smaller-water option when you're looking for trout without having to cover a large lake or river. The fish can be concentrated around deeper water, structure, and areas where moving water enters or leaves the pond. Early morning and evening are generally the times I'd concentrate on first, especially when the weather is warmer.For trout, PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs are good bait choices. PowerBait fished on the bottom is an easy setup, while a small piece of nightcrawler under a bobber can be useful when the fish are suspended or feeding higher in the water column. If you're not getting bites on the bottom, changing the depth is one of the first adjustments I'd make.Small spinners are useful because they allow you to cover the pond and figure out where the fish are holding. Panther Martins, Rooster Tails, Mepps, and other small trout spinners are good options. Cast around the edges of deeper water, along structure, and near any current entering the pond. Keep the retrieve slow and vary the depth.Small spoons can also work, especially when the trout are actively feeding. Silver, gold, and brighter trout patterns are good starting choices. If the fish are following without striking, try a slower retrieve with occasional pauses or switch to a smaller lure.The areas around moving water are worth paying attention to. Trout often use current to feed while staying out of the strongest flow, so look for the seam where faster water meets slower water. Deeper pockets and shaded areas can also hold fish, particularly as the day warms.If you're fly fishing, small nymphs such as Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, Zebra Midges, and small leech patterns are good choices. A Woolly Bugger can also be worth trying around deeper water and structure.
