Lake Almanor is providing very good trout and salmon fishing, with the best bite occurring from first light through the morning hours and again during the evening. Rainbow trout, brown trout, and king salmon are all being caught consistently. Trout are feeding along rocky shorelines, submerged points, and around the edges of deeper flats early in the day before moving into deeper, cooler water as temperatures rise.Boat anglers are having the most success trolling Speedy Shiners, Needlefish, Wedding Ring spinners tipped with nightcrawler, and small spoons in silver, gold, copper, and watermelon patterns. Dodgers paired with small hoochies or threaded nightcrawlers have also been producing both trout and salmon. Adjusting trolling depth throughout the day has been the key to staying on active fish.Shore anglers are catching rainbow trout using PowerBait in chartreuse, garlic, and rainbow colors, along with inflated nightcrawlers and salmon eggs fished near points, creek mouths, and rocky shorelines during the early morning hours. Anglers casting Kastmasters, Panther Martins, Rooster Tails, and Thomas Buoyant spoons are finding success before the sun gets high.Fly anglers are doing well with olive and black Woolly Buggers, balanced leeches, chironomids, Callibaetis nymphs, damsel nymphs, and blood midge patterns. During calm mornings and evenings, Callibaetis dry flies and attractor patterns are producing surface strikes from feeding trout.Rainbow trout are commonly running 16 to 22 inches, with larger fish over 24 inches caught regularly. Brown trout continue to provide opportunities for anglers fishing deeper structure, while king salmon are being caught by anglers trolling deeper water. The most consistent success has come from fishing early, covering water, and adjusting depth as fish move with changing water temperatures.
