Lake Almanor is fishing fair to good for trout, with the best action coming during the early morning and evening hours when fish are more active. Anglers are finding trout around deeper water, shoreline drop-offs, springs, and areas where baitfish and insects are concentrated.Shore anglers are catching trout using PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs. Garlic-scented PowerBait, rainbow, chartreuse, and orange colors have been good choices. Fishing bait on the bottom with a light leader or suspending bait a few feet off the bottom has been effective.Small spoons and spinners are producing fish for anglers working the shoreline. Silver, gold, and rainbow-colored lures are good options. Kastmaster, Thomas Buoyant, Needlefish, and Rooster Tail style lures are working when retrieved slowly with pauses.Trolling anglers are targeting trout with small spoons, Rapala-style lures, and trolling setups with flashers and bait. Slow trolling and adjusting depth has been important as fish are moving throughout the water column.Fly anglers are using Woolly Buggers, leech patterns, Hares Ear nymphs, Pheasant Tail nymphs, and small midge patterns. Fishing streamers near drop-offs and deeper water has been productive, especially early and late in the day.Smallmouth bass are also active, with anglers catching them using small swimbaits, soft plastics, tube jigs, and crankbaits around rocky areas and structure. Darker-colored soft plastics and slower presentations are working well. The afternoon bite can slow down as temperatures rise, so focusing on deeper water, shaded areas, and moving locations to find active fish is recommended. A good approach is starting the morning with bait or a small spoon, then changing techniques as fish move deeper during the day.
