The Carson River is fishing fair to good, with the best action taking place during the first few hours after sunrise before water temperatures climb. Trout are holding in the deeper runs, undercut banks, and shaded pools, while the faster riffles continue to produce fish during the morning hours. As the day warms, slowing down your presentation and targeting deeper water has been the key to consistent success.Anglers using bait are finding the best results with salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, and scented trout worms drifted naturally through deeper pools. Spinners such as Panther Martins, Rooster Tails, and Blue Fox Vibrax in gold, silver, and black have been producing well when retrieved just fast enough to keep the blades turning. Small spoons, including Kastmasters and Thomas Buoyant spoons, have also been effective in the deeper runs.Fly anglers are seeing the most success using size 14 to 18 Pheasant Tail nymphs, Hare's Ear nymphs, Prince Nymphs, Zebra Midges, and Copper Johns under an indicator. During the early morning and evening, Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams, Yellow Stimulators, and small hopper patterns are producing fish on the surface. Olive and black Woolly Buggers stripped through the deeper pools have been taking some of the larger brown trout.Rainbow trout continue to make up the majority of the catch, with brown trout mixed in throughout the river. Most fish are running 10 to 16 inches, with an occasional larger brown trout found in the deeper holes. Fishing has been most productive from daylight until about 10:00 a.m., with another good bite developing during the last couple of hours before sunset. Recent warm weather has increased aquatic vegetation in slower sections of the river, making moving water and shaded runs the best locations to target.

As of late February 2025, fishing conditions on the Carson River have been challenging. The river has settled into typical winter flow levels, leading to slower fishing activity. Anglers have found some success using small spinners, particularly around the Broken Dam area, targeting the remaining stocked trout.
