Carson River is fishing fair to good in the cooler sections, with the best action coming during the early morning and evening hours. Trout are holding in deeper pools, behind larger rocks, along current breaks, and in the slower water along the edges.Anglers are catching trout using small spinners, spoons, and soft plastics. Small silver or gold spinners have been effective when worked slowly through deeper pools. Small Panther Martin, Mepps, and Rooster Tail style lures are good choices.Bait anglers are using nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, and PowerBait in slower sections where bait fishing is permitted. A small piece of nightcrawler drifted along the bottom has been particularly effective around deeper pools and current seams.Fly anglers are having success with small nymphs, including Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, Prince Nymphs, and small stonefly patterns. Small Woolly Buggers and other streamer patterns can also produce fish around deeper water and undercut banks.Trout are generally being found in the deeper runs and pools rather than the fastest current. Casting upstream and allowing the lure or bait to drift naturally through the deeper water has been productive.Warmer afternoon temperatures can slow the trout bite, so focusing on shaded water, deeper pools, and moving water during the middle of the day is recommended. Early morning and the last couple of hours before dark remain the best times to target trout.

As of late February 2025, fishing conditions on the Carson River have been challenging. The river has settled into typical winter flow levels, leading to slower fishing activity. Anglers have found some success using small spinners, particularly around the Broken Dam area, targeting the remaining stocked trout.
