The Carson River is providing fair to good fishing opportunities for trout, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours when water temperatures are cooler. Rainbow trout make up the majority of the catch, with brown trout occasionally being caught in deeper runs and undercut banks.Trout are generally holding in deeper pools, runs, and pocket water. Early in the day, focus on depths of 2 to 4 feet along seams and current breaks. As the day warms, fish often move into deeper holding water ranging from 4 to 8 feet deep.Bait anglers are finding success with nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, and small pieces of shrimp drifted naturally through deeper pools and runs. Spin anglers should focus on Panther Martins, Rooster Tails, Kastmasters, and small spoons in silver, gold, and black patterns. Slow retrieves through deeper holes and along current seams tend to produce the best results.Fly anglers are having success with Pheasant Tail nymphs, Hare's Ear nymphs, Prince Nymphs, and small stonefly patterns. During evening hours, caddis and mayfly dry flies can be productive when fish begin feeding on the surface. The most productive water is typically found around riffle-to-pool transitions, undercut banks, submerged structure, and deeper runs. Anglers should concentrate on depths of 3 to 6 feet for most of the day, moving shallower during low-light periods and deeper as the sun gets higher. The best fishing is generally from sunrise until mid-morning and again during the last few hours before dark.

As of late February 2025, fishing conditions on the Carson River have been challenging. The river has settled into typical winter flow levels, leading to slower fishing activity. Anglers have found some success using small spinners, particularly around the Broken Dam area, targeting the remaining stocked trout. Fly fishers have reported limited catches with small streamers and nymphs on light tippets, with occasional surface activity during early morning and late evening hours.Click here to unsubcribe from your fishing reports.
