Davis Lake is a good trout destination, with the better fishing generally centered around cooler water and areas where trout can find food. In the fall, I would concentrate on the early morning and evening periods, with trout often moving shallower to feed before becoming more scattered as the day warms.For shore anglers, PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs are good starting choices. PowerBait or an inflated nightcrawler fished a few feet off the bottom can be especially effective around deeper shoreline areas. Rather than keeping the bait directly on the bottom all day, it is worth experimenting with the leader length and getting the bait suspended above weeds or bottom debris.Small spoons are another good way to cover water. Kastmasters, Thomas-style spoons, Needlefish, and other small trout spoons can work well. Start with gold, silver, orange, pink, or other brighter patterns, then change to more natural colors if the fish are following but not striking. A slow to moderate retrieve is a good starting point, especially when the water is cooler.If you have a boat or kayak, trolling can be very productive. Try small spoons, trolling flies, or small plugs and work different depths until you locate the trout. The fish can move considerably throughout the water column, so changing depth is often more important than simply changing lures. If you find fish suspended at a particular depth, stay with that depth and adjust your trolling presentation around it.Fly anglers can target trout around shallow weed beds and feeding areas. Woolly Buggers, leech patterns, damsel patterns, Pheasant Tail nymphs, Hare's Ears, and small chironomid-style patterns are useful choices. A slow retrieve with a streamer or a dead-drifted nymph under an indicator can both work depending on what the trout are feeding on.The shallow weed beds are particularly important because they provide food and cover. When trout are visibly cruising or feeding near the surface, casting toward the edges of the weeds rather than directly into them can be productive. For bank anglers, areas where deeper water is reachable from shore are worth concentrating on, especially as the day warms.For bass, look around submerged weed beds, brush, and other structure. Wacky-rigged worms, small swimbaits, craw-style plastics, and weedless jigs are good options. Work them slowly around the edges of cover rather than retrieving quickly through open water.If I were heading to Davis with one spinning setup, I would bring PowerBait and nightcrawlers for soaking bait, along with a few small gold, silver, orange, and pink spoons. I would start early with a spoon and cover water, then switch to bait around deeper shoreline areas if the active bite slows.
