Davis Lake is producing good fishing for rainbow trout, especially during the early morning and late evening when fish are feeding in the shallows. As the day warms, trout are moving into deeper water, making slower presentations and fishing from a boat, float tube, or kayak more productive. Weed edges, submerged points, and drop-offs continue to hold the most active fish.Bait anglers are having the best success with nightcrawlers, inflated worms, PowerBait in rainbow, garlic, and chartreuse colors, and salmon eggs fished just off the bottom. Trolling has been productive with small Needlefish, Speedy Shiners, Dick Nite spoons, and Wedding Ring spinners tipped with a piece of nightcrawler. Gold and silver patterns have been especially effective during the morning hours.Fly anglers continue to find excellent action using olive and black Woolly Buggers, balanced leeches, damsel nymphs, Callibaetis nymphs, Blood Midges, and Chironomid patterns suspended under an indicator. During calm mornings and evenings, trout are also taking Callibaetis dry flies and adult damselfly patterns near weed beds.Most rainbow trout are ranging from 16 to 22 inches, with larger fish over 24 inches being caught by anglers fishing deeper structure. The best bite has been from first light until about 10:00 a.m., with another strong window during the final two hours of daylight. Fishing the edges of the weed beds and gradually working into deeper water as the sun rises has been the most consistent pattern for catching quality trout.
