Fishing at Frenchmans Lake near Reno, NV is currently good, with steady action for rainbow trout and some brown trout. Fish are holding in mid-depth to deeper water, generally around 1225 feet, especially near the old river channel, rocky points, and drop-offs. As conditions warm through the day, some fish will slide into shallower flats and edges, but the most consistent bite is still found during early morning and late afternoon periods. For trolling, small spoons like Kastmasters, Little Cleos, and Needlefish in chrome, gold, or rainbow finishes are very effective when fished slowly and kept in the 1225 foot range. Downriggers or weighted line setups help keep your presentation in the strike zone where fish are actively feeding. For bait fishing, PowerBait in bright colors such as chartreuse, rainbow, or garlic is producing well when fished on the bottom or slightly off it near structure. Nightcrawlers and salmon eggs also work consistently when drifted naturally along drop-offs or deeper transitions.Fly fishing is productive with leech patterns, woolly buggers, and balanced leeches worked slowly near the bottom or along deeper structure. Small nymphs like pheasant tails and midges under an indicator can also be effective when fish are keyed in on smaller forage. Adjusting depth and covering different water levels throughout the day is important, as fish will move between deeper and shallower zones depending on light and temperature.
