Frenchmans Lake is fishing fair to good for rainbow and brown trout, with the better action coming during the cooler morning and evening hours. Trout are holding around deeper water, rocky shorelines, points, drop-offs, and areas where wind is pushing food toward the bank.Shore anglers are having success with PowerBait, especially rainbow, chartreuse, orange, and garlic varieties. Nightcrawlers and salmon eggs are also good choices, particularly when fished on the bottom with a light leader.Small spinners and spoons are working well when anglers are covering water. Silver, gold, and rainbow-colored lures are good options. Thomas Buoyant, Kastmaster, Needlefish, and Rooster Tail style lures can be worked slowly along shorelines and around drop-offs.Anglers trolling are using small spoons, Rapala-style minnow lures, and other small trout presentations. Slow trolling and changing depth regularly is helping locate fish as they move between shallow and deeper water.Fly anglers are using Woolly Buggers, leech patterns, Hares Ear nymphs, Pheasant Tail nymphs, and small midge patterns. Streamers worked near rocky structure and drop-offs can produce fish, particularly early and late in the day.As the water warms during the afternoon, trout are generally moving toward deeper water. Focusing on deeper shorelines, drop-offs, and shaded areas can help maintain the bite. For the best starting setup, I would use PowerBait or a nightcrawler on the bottom in the morning, then switch to a small spoon or spinner to search for actively feeding trout.
