The Truckee River near Reno is providing fair to good fishing, with the best action occurring during the cooler morning hours and again in the evening. Trout are actively feeding in deeper runs, riffles, shaded banks, and areas where faster water transitions into slower pools. As daytime temperatures increase, fish are becoming more selective and moving into deeper, cooler sections of the river.Rainbow trout and brown trout are the primary targets, with occasional mountain whitefish also being caught. Anglers are finding the most success by focusing on deeper pools, seams between fast and slow water, undercut banks, and areas with structure. Smaller fish are active throughout the river, while larger trout are requiring more natural presentations and slower techniques.Fly anglers are having success using nymph patterns such as Pheasant Tail nymphs, Hares Ear nymphs, Prince Nymphs, Copper Johns, Zebra Midges, and Perdigon nymphs. These are working best when fished under an indicator through deeper runs and seams. Stonefly nymphs and larger attractor patterns are also producing in faster water. During early mornings and evenings, anglers are finding some surface activity with Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams, Stimulators, and small hopper patterns.Spin anglers are catching fish using small Panther Martins, Rooster Tails, Blue Fox Vibrax spinners, and small spoons such as Kastmasters and Thomas Buoyant spoons. Natural colors, black, gold, silver, and brown patterns have been effective. A slower retrieve with pauses through deeper pools has been producing better than fast retrieves.Bait anglers, where regulations allow, are finding success with nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, and scented trout worms drifted naturally through deeper holes and slower runs. Keeping bait moving naturally with the current has been the key to getting bites. Most trout are running in the 8 to 14 inch range, with larger fish available in deeper pools and less pressured areas. The most productive times have been early morning until late morning and the final hours before dark. Anglers are having the best success by downsizing presentations, fishing slower, and concentrating on current breaks where trout can conserve energy while feeding.
