Topaz Lake is providing fair to good trout fishing with rainbow trout making up the majority of the catch. Fishing has been most consistent during early morning and late evening hours when fish are more actively cruising the shoreline and shallow flats.Trout are generally holding in 5 to 12 feet of water during low-light periods and moving into 12 to 25 feet of water as the sun gets higher and surface temperatures warm. Windy conditions are often improving the bite by pushing baitfish and plankton toward wind-blown shorelines.Shore anglers are having success with PowerBait (especially chartreuse, garlic, and rainbow colors), inflated nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs fished near the bottom or suspended a foot or two off it. Rocky points, coves, and areas with quick access to deeper water are producing the most consistent action.Boat anglers trolling are doing well with spoons like Kastmasters, Needlefish, and Thomas Bouyants, along with Wedding Rings tipped with nightcrawlers. Silver, gold, and rainbow trout patterns are the most productive. Early trolling depths of 8 to 15 feet are working best, with fish moving deeper into 15 to 30 feet during the middle of the day.Fly anglers are finding success with Woolly Buggers, damsel nymphs, chironomids, and leech patterns. Focus on 5 to 15 feet of water during early and late periods, adjusting deeper as fish drop off into cooler water during the day.Overall, anglers should concentrate on 5 to 12 feet of water during prime feeding times and 12 to 25+ feet during midday. The most productive areas are wind-blown shorelines, rocky structure, and transition zones between shallow flats and deeper water.
