Topaz Lake is fishing fair to good for rainbow trout, with the best action coming during the early morning and evening hours when the water is cooler. Trout are being found around deeper water, points, rocky shorelines, and areas where baitfish are moving.Shore anglers are having success using PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs. Rainbow, chartreuse, orange, and garlic-scented PowerBait have been good choices. Fishing bait on the bottom with a light leader or suspending bait a few feet off the bottom has been effective.Small spoons and spinners are producing trout for anglers covering water from shore. Silver, gold, rainbow, and darker-colored lures are working well. Kastmaster, Thomas Buoyant, Needlefish, and Rooster Tail style lures are good options when retrieved slowly with occasional pauses.Trolling anglers are using small spoons, Rapala-style minnow lures, and flashers with bait. Slow trolling and changing depths has been important as trout are moving between shallow and deeper water throughout the day.Fly anglers are catching fish using Woolly Buggers, leech patterns, Hares Ear nymphs, Pheasant Tail nymphs, and small midge patterns. Streamers worked near drop-offs and deeper shoreline areas can be effective.Bass anglers are finding some action using soft plastics, small swimbaits, and jigs around rocky areas and structure. Slower presentations have been working better as fish move deeper during warmer parts of the day.For the best chance at trout, start early with PowerBait or a nightcrawler on the bottom, then switch to a small spoon or spinner to locate active fish. Concentrating on deeper water, points, and areas with access to quick depth changes should provide the best opportunities.
