Pyramid Lake near Reno is a great fall fishing destination, especially with the October opener approaching. The fishing can be excellent for Lahontan cutthroat trout, and the biggest key is being prepared to fish deeper water and cover different depths until you locate active fish.The season starts October 1, making the opener a great opportunity to get out early and target trout along the shoreline. Early morning and evening can be productive, but Pyramid can produce fish throughout the day when you find the right area and presentation.For shore anglers, ladder fishing is one of the most popular approaches. Marabou jigs, small spoons, swimbaits, and other artificial lures can all be effective. Black, purple, white, olive, silver, and brighter contrasting colors are good options to have available. Try different retrieve speeds and don't be afraid to let the lure get down toward the bottom before starting the retrieve.Fly anglers can use sinking lines and flies that get down into the deeper water. Woolly Buggers, leech patterns, Woolly Worms, and other larger flies are good choices. The key is getting the fly down and keeping it close to the bottom while slowly working it back.If you're fishing from a boat, trolling is another good way to cover water and locate trout. Minnow-style lures, spoons, trolling flies, and other larger trout presentations can be used. Once you find fish, pay attention to the depth, speed, and direction you were traveling because repeating that pattern can help produce additional fish.The shoreline structure is important at Pyramid. Look for drop-offs, points, rocky areas, and places where shallow water quickly transitions into deeper water. Trout can move through these areas while feeding, so don't assume you need to cast as far as possible on every trip.One of the biggest things to remember at Pyramid is that the fish can change locations and depth throughout the day.
