At this time of year, fishing in the mainstem Willamette River is generally quiet compared with the peak seasons of spring and summer. Winter conditions mean cold water and relatively low angling pressure, and limited opportunities for catching migratory fish such as salmon and steelhead are typical right now. Although winter steelhead do enter the lower Willamette and tributaries in the colder months, the runs are usually modest at this stage of the season and catch rates tend to be low until later in winter or early spring when numbers build. For salmon, the primary spring Chinook runs do not typically arrive until spring (around AprilJune), and coho fisheries are more of a fall fishery. Because of this, most anglers targeting salmon in the Willamette wait for later in the year when those runs develop.Trout and warmwater species such as bass, crappie, and bullheads remain present in the river year-round, but cold winter water temperatures slow their feeding activity and general catchability in January.Regulations for salmon, steelhead, and trout can vary by reach and are updated seasonally, so its recommended to consult the latest ODFW regulations and weekly recreation report for specifics before heading out.
