Detroit Lakes fishing right now is typical of winter conditions, with cold water temps and lower water levels due to the reservoirs seasonal winter drawdown. According to the most recent Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Willamette Zone recreation report, the reservoirs water level is currently too low to safely launch boats at Mongold State Park, which is the main ramp most anglers use. This means many anglers are focusing on shore fishing from accessible points around the lake.Fishing activity this time of year centers on holdover trout and kokanee salmon that remain from spring and summer stockings. These fish are still present through the winter, and anglers can find rainbow trout and kokanee available if they put in the time. Techniques like float fishing, jigging, or drifting small spoons and spinners can produce strikes, though success often requires experimentation because activity slows in colder water.Kokanee fishing in Detroit Lake tends to be on the quieter side during midwinter, since most adults move into tributaries to spawn in the fall and early winter. Still, there are usually some left that will bite, especially on calmer days. Anglers should remember that all Chinook salmon caught in Detroit Lake must be released unharmed, as harvest of spring Chinook in the reservoir is prohibited to protect listed fish. The winter period also generally brings less crowded conditions, so anglers looking for solitude and willing to fish from shore or a kayak can enjoy quiet winter fishing. Water levels are expected to begin rising again in late winter or early spring as seasonal refilling begins.
