Foster Reservoir (near Sweet Home on the South Santiam River) continues to offer yearround fishing opportunities, though winter conditions mean activity is generally slower compared with spring and fall. The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife notes that the lake supports multiple species including trout, bass, perch, and catfish, and that trout and yellow perch can be caught throughout the year. Trout in particular were stocked multiple times in the fall of 2025, and although water temperatures are cold now, fish are present and available to anglers. Only kokanee and adiposefinclipped hatchery trout may be kept under the 5trout bag limit, while bass, perch, catfish, and other warmwater fish have no size or number limits.Winter water levels at Foster have dropped to their seasonal low, which can restrict access in some areas, but the Sunnyside Park Boat Ramp is still usable and should remain available throughout the winter. Bank access is also possible at several sites around the reservoir, including rest stops and parks, which gives anglers options for shore fishing even if boat access is more challenging.Anglers fishing Foster Reservoir right now can expect coldwater trout action that may require patience and adjusted tactics. Trout will generally be less active in winters colder temperatures, so try focusing on deeper water near structure and use offerings like spoons, spinners, or bait presentations suited to slower fish. Yellow perch and other warmwater species may also be caught near dropoffs or structure where they hold even in cooler conditions.
