Fishing on the Gunnison River is currently solid during the early morning hours, with low, clear late-summer flows running approximately 260345 CFS. Morning water temperatures can be around 61F, but afternoon temperatures on lower sections are reaching 6772F, which can put significant stress on trout. Anglers are encouraged to fish early and avoid targeting trout once water temperatures become elevated.For flies, Tricos (#1822), caddis and PMDs (#1418) are good choices during the morning. Small Perdigons, Spanish Bullets, and Pats Rubber Legs (#814) are effective subsurface options, while dark Woolly Buggers and small streamers can produce early along the banks. A voluntary half-day closure from noon to midnight is currently in place on portions of the lower Gunnison, including the stretch from the US 50 Bridge at Whitewater down to the Blue Mesa area and from Pleasure Park downstream to Highway 65.Uncompaghre River Below RidgewayFishing on the Uncompahgre River below Ridgway Reservoir is currently fair to good, with stable flows around 110150 CFS, providing excellent conditions for wading and technical presentations. The water is clear and trout are active, but they can be selective and easily spooked, so anglers should use a stealthy approach, light tippet, small flies, and careful presentations. The most consistent fishing has been from mid-morning through late afternoon.Productive patterns include JuJu Baetis, Zebra Midges, Demon Midges and Griffiths Gnats (#1824). For nymphing, try Rainbow Perdigons, small Pheasant Tails (#1822), and Cased Caddis (#1418). Small black leeches can also be effective. Anglers fishing the Pa-Co-Chu-Puk section within Ridgway State Park should remember that this section is catch-and-release only with artificial flies and lures.
