As of late March 2026, the Colorado River is transitioning into spring, with fishing conditions varying significantly by region. While rising water temperatures are increasing trout activity in the upper stretches, lower river sections in Arizona and Nevada are seeing black bass prepare for the spawn. Upper Colorado River (CO)The river is currently in a "sweet spot" before the major spring runoff. Conditions: Water temperatures are rising into the mid-40sF, which is boosting trout metabolism and triggering consistent midday feeding.Best Hatches: Midges and Blue-Winged Olives (BWO) are the primary hatches. Look for dry fly action during the warmest part of the afternoon.Top Strategies:Nymphing: Use deep rigs in slower pools during the middle of the day. Effective patterns include cased Caddis, Midge larva, and egg patterns.Streamers: Dead drifting or slow-stripping streamers is highly effective right now.Hotspots: The stretch from Glenwood Springs down to Silt and Rifle is fishing particularly well.
