As of late March 2026, fishing on the Grand Mesa is generally rated good to excellent, though it remains in a transitional phase between winter ice fishing and early spring open water. While many lower-elevation lakes are beginning to open up, many of the higher-elevation lakes above 10,000 feet may still have significant ice cover. Current Conditions & TechniquesIce Status: Ice conditions depend heavily on elevation. Lower lakes like Ward Creek and Mesa Lakes often open first, while larger, higher bodies of water like Island Lake may still be frozen or have unstable "early spring" ice.Species: Activity is high for Rainbow, Brook, and Cutthroat trout.Techniques:For open water, use subsurface patterns such as nymphs (Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears) and small midges (black or red) under indicators.For remaining ice, focus on shorelines using light lines and small hooks.
