Fishing across the Grand Mesa Lakes is currently good to excellent, with cooler high-elevation water keeping trout active despite the summer heat. Rainbow trout, brook trout, and Colorado River cutthroat trout are the primary species, with fish feeding actively during the cooler morning and evening hours. Terrestrial insects are providing excellent opportunities right now, so grasshopper, ant, and beetle patterns can be especially productive along grassy banks and weed edges. If surface activity slows during midday, try Zebra Midges (#1822) or Pheasant Tail Nymphs (#1820) below an indicator.At deeper lakes such as Eggleston and Deep Ward, anglers can also find good action using Woolly Buggers and small streamers. Shore anglers are having success with silver or gold Kastmasters, Panther Martins, and Blue Fox inline spinners, while traditional bait setups with nightcrawlers or trout-scented PowerBait remain effective. Anglers should be aware that Island Lake Road (NFSR 116) is temporarily closed, so plan alternate access when heading onto the Grand Mesa.
