The Upper Madison River has been fishing great when it's not too windy. Open water has been easy to find, access has been straightforward, and the river has stayed very fishable for this time of year. Wind has been the biggest factor affecting conditions, but on calmer days the best fishing has come from late morning into the afternoon.Nymphing has been the most dependable way to catch fish. Rubberlegs and other stonefly-style nymphs have worked well as lead flies, followed by smaller patterns such as spanish bullet perdigons, zebra midges, frenchies, and pheasant tails. A 9-foot fluorocarbon leader of 3X or 4X has been a solid setup for managing weight and fishing deeper water.
