The Lake is an angler's paradise with excellent summer and winter fishing opportunities. For a number of years, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has been stocking Brookville Lake with walleye, muskie and striped bass. The tail water area is stocked annually with brown and rainbow trout. Brookville Lake is also populated by naturally-reproducing, fresh water fish including like, rock bass, white bass, catfish, walleye, striped bass, musky, crappie large and small mouth bass as well as bluegill and catfish. Walleye grow large enough in Brookville Lake so that the females can be milked for eggs, which are used to supply walleye fry to several lakes in Indiana. A part of the Brookville Lake -Whitewater Memorial State Park Complex, Brookville Reservoir lies in the historic east fork of the Whitewater River Valley. Traces of prehistoric Native American mounds are still found throughout this valley. The area is known by some worldwide for its significant deposit of Ordovician fossils. These 450-million-year-old fossils, reminders of a primeval inland sea, can still be seen. Brookville Lake is home to two State Recreation Areas: Mounds SRA (not to be confused with Mounds State Park in Anderson) and Quakertown SRA. The lake property has more than 25 miles of hiking trails, boating opportunities, and nationally known recreational and sport fishing. Two beaches and more than 400 campsites make this an ideal family vacation spot. The area was purchased by the federal government for flood control and to provide a place for wildlife and recreation. More than 11,000 acres provide a variety of habitats for plants and wildlife. The size limit for walleye is 14 inches, and you can keep 6 per person. There is no minimum size limit for striped bass, and you can keep 2 per person. There is no minimum size limit for crappie, and you can keep 25 per person. For walleyes, you can cast crank baits, spoons, or twister tails. You can also try trolling or pitching weed weasel jigs tipped with night crawlers. For crappies, you can use slip bobbers with minnows or wax worms, or try vertical jigging with small jigs tipped with plastics.
