Halibut 2 Striper 2 Leopard shark 2 Sturgeon 2 Crab 3 The annual California Department of Fish and Wildlife Salmon Information Meeting will be held by webinar on March 1 from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m., and those whose livelihood depend upon salmon are waiting not so patiently for the first real alternatives for the upcoming ocean salmon season. There is growing concern that the trend of limited commercial and recreational seasons will continue in 2023 as according to the Golden State Salmon Association, Some state experts are suggesting that they havent seen such grim returns since 2007, the year before the fishery closure. The annual information meeting will cover the 2022 ocean and river salmon fishing seasons, Central Valley and Klamath Basin river returns, and 2023 abundance forecasts. The public is invited to provide input regarding the upcoming ocean salmon season. After the information meeting, the Pacific Fisheries Management Council will meet in Seattle from March 5 through 10 to determine whether any in-season action are required for fisheries schedule to open prior to May 16, and they will also craft three regulatory alternatives for fisheries in effect on or after May 16. This is followed by a public hearing on March 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Santa Rosa, a second PFMC meeting from April 1 through 7 in Foster City, and the California Fish and Game Commission on April 19-20 where the council will receive an update on the 2023 ocean salmon sport fishery in effect. Information on the process is available through wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Salmon/preseason. Few boats are operating for crab-only trips when the weather cooperates, but a Crab Validation Stamp is necessary as crab pots are not able to be used. Inside of San Francisco Bay, Keith Fraser of Loch Lomond Bait and Tackle in San Rafael predicted sturgeon fever due to the following conditions in San Pablo Bay: no trash fish as the fresh water has pushed out the sharks, crab, and rays; chocolate brown water everywhere; and the sturgeon are aggressive and hungry. There have been a few isolated herring spawns in the Sausalito area, but a few spawns are starting to show up off of San Francisco shoreline. Navigation remains dangerous due to the amount of floating and submerged debris that has entered the bay. The party boats remain quiet, and the only game in town will be crab-only trips when the ocean settles down or sturgeon trips within the south bay or San Pablo Bay. When the water clears, boats will start trolling for halibut around Oyster Point, but this is a few weeks off. Live bait isnt anticipated in the San Francisco receivers until mid-April at the earliest. Sturgeon fishing is closed Jan. 1 to March 15 in the central bay from that portion of San Francisco Bay included within the following boundaries: A direct line between Pt. Chauncy (National Marine Fisheries Laboratory) and Pt. Richmond, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and a direct line between Pt. Lobos and Pt. Bonita.
