VERDE VALLEY STREAMS (Red Rock Ranger District, Coconino National Forest)OAK CREEK: Starting January 1, 2023, the catch and release section on Oak Creek has been expanded to include Oak Creek from the Highway 89A bridge at Slide Rock State Park upstream to the Sterling Springs Fish Hatchery property boundary including the West Fork Oak Creek. This section will be catch and release only for trout, artificial fly and lure only, barbless hooks only. Stream flow is at base flow conditions with a recent reading of 31.9 cfs, stream temperature 53.2-59.9oF, turbidity 2 FNU @ 8:45 a.m. on 4/28/2025. Cave Springs Campground will remain closed for repairs. Access to the Cave Spring area will open April 11th for walk in and angling access. The Banjo Bill picnic area is closed for repairs. fishing has been good in oak creek smaller midges have been super effective in deeper pools chromanids are also a great option as well as small streamers such as semi seals or mini bunny leaches, dry's should also be effective parachute Adams, mosquitoes, blue duns, hoppers etc... match the hatch and analyze the bug life you're seeing out there it can differ day to day. anglers using spinning set ups can throw those droppers under a water bobber, or be just as affective throwing a mealworm on a smaller baitholder hook, avoid high vis line or braid creek fish are smart, stick with fluorocarbon.
