Black Bass: Tournament angler Andy Wicker of Pomaria reports that August can be a tough time to bass fish on Murray, as the water is hot and fish are stressed. Early and late continue to be the best times to fish shallow with topwater lures and worms, and during the heat of the day it can be hard to find a very good pattern. However, at times the offshore topwater action for suspended fish can be very good, there is almost always some isolated schooling activity this month, and bass can be caught out of deep brush. Night fishing is another option.Striped bass: Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that at the end of July fish were still stacked up in the lower lake, but at some point in August they will start to move. When that happens they usually move shallower and suspend higher in the water column, and sometimes herring on free-lines are the best way to catch them.Crappie: Captain Brad Taylor reports that fish will continue to hold around brush, bridges and docks up the lake in August, but fishing is likely to remain tough. While in the upper lake you can get away with fishing in less than 20 feet of water, in the clearer water of the lower lake you usually need to fish at least the 25-30 foot range to be productive. Up the lake minnows and jigs should both produce, while down the lake most of the time fish show a preference for small live bait.Catfish: Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that both because of feeding patterns and boat traffic the night bite will again be much better during August. Dip baits and a variety of cut bait will catch fish in shallow water around points and humps, while during the day you should fish much deeper but in the same areas. Avoid weekend boat traffic if possible.
