The Lake Pontchartrain area is in an excellent fall fishing pattern for speckled trout and redfish, with water temperatures around 69F. Anglers are reporting good catches as fish follow the large amounts of bait (shrimp and mullet) moving inshore. Species and Locations Speckled Trout: Fishing for speckled trout has been phenomenal this year. Good spots include the northern shoreline between Bayou Lacombe and Goose Point/Todd's Bayou, the Trestles, and the deeper waters of the Rigolets. The Trestles can be hit or miss, but the "hits can be huge".Redfish: Redfish are stacking up on inside islands and grass lines in the interior marshes as the water drops out for winter. Look for them in the Salt Bayou area and around the mouth of the Tchefuncte River. Bull reds are breaking up into smaller, more solitary groups, prowling the shallows for bait.Flounder & White Trout: These are also being caught in the Salt Bayou and Trestles areas. Bass: Bass are still lurking in the grass and along the shoreline, receptive to topwater offerings and spinnerbaits, especially where the water is a bit cooler. Recommended Baits and Techniques Live bait: Live shrimp is a top choice, especially for sheepshead and trout when fished on the bottom with a Carolina rig. Artificial lures: Speckled Trout: Use bright-colored Matrix Shads or fluke-style baits under a popping cork or rigged weightless around grass lines. Jigging the bottom with a 3/8 oz jig head can also be effective. Redfish: Plastics and shrimp imitations work well in the marsh and around grass lines. Bass: Topwater lures worked.
