As of 05/02/24 The flows have come up quite a bit in the Deckers corridor. Native flows from Cheesman are at 147 cfs. so the feeder creeks are definitely adding volume to the flows. Keep an aye out downstream of town as these feeder creeks may disrupt the visibility. These flows are a welcome sight and the fish are really happy. These higher flows will bring larger food sources into the mix up here. Stoneflies, cranefly larva, scuds, and worms are all in play now. The fishing has been good and is getting better day by day. Fish are spread out and feeding opportunistically throughout the day, but especially when the midges and BWO's start hatching. It has been pretty busy in the Deckers corridor recently and will likely remain that way. Dont let that scare you away from fishing here as there is a ton of water to fish here.Cheesman reservoir is currently 98% full and we are expecting the lake to start spilling in the next couple of weeks.Hatches: As usual for this time of year, BWO's and midges are still doing their thing. We have seen an increase in caddis, especially sub surface. The recent winds have made dry fly fishing a little more difficult, but the opportunity is there on most days. We are seeing some great BWO hatches starting around mid morning each day. With these flows you will definitely want to add some larger food sources into the mix. Scuds, worms, stoneflies, cranefly larva and leaches. Mix these in with your standard small fare.Tactics: For Nymphing- Depth and weight will be very important right now. The increase in flows will make this imperative to your success. Fish are occupying all parts of the river and as the flows stay high or increase, they will move to "quieter" places in the river. Pay attention to your presentation. The dry fly fishing (BWO's) has been very good on most days, if the wind doesnt stamp it down. Cloudier days have afforded some of the heaviest early spring BWO's we have seen in quite some time here. Fish are venturing out into more riffle type water when the midges and baetis are hatching. This can also be a great time of year to throw some streamers.Tips: There is a lot of water to fish in this area. Its the perfect time to go explore some of those places you dont frequent!
