9/14/2026. Local water has "turned over". water clarity has definitely dropped and the surface temps have dropped as much as 3-5 degrees in some areas. This is going to redistribute some of the better fishing to clear pockets of cleaner water. The big issue that anglers are still facing is bait. Currently Dana point has 3-5" anchovy, Newport has sardine, Nacho's has 6-8" sardine, and Long Beach has Sardine. This can change daily and most bait barges are sold out by mid morning. Make sure you bring your sabiki rigs and cast nets if you can't get live bait from the barge. frozen baits have been fairly effective as well as a backup. Yellowtail has died off a bit locally. Look for the cleaner pockets of water. Yellows at the rigs have been running straight to the pylons to break you off. 40-50lb gear to turn their heads is a necessity. There have been some yellows hanging around the pipeline north of Newport, and some near the 150 and 105. Most fish are being taken on anchor with a good chum line and downhill current. As always watch the weather, the swells from the eastern and central Pacific storms have been brutal, don't get caught off guard. Tight Lines.
