Unfortunately after the past two days of rain, the Little Juniata is blown out again. The current cfs (cubic feet of water per second) is 2290, while the median is around 564 cfs for this time of year. Once conditions clear up, there should be plenty of opportunity for both fly fishermen and spinning anglers... The water temperature looks to be in the low 50's, and once it starts clearing up, the fishing should be top-notch. Current hatches on the Little J include: BWO (sizes 18-22), Midges (sizes 20-26), Small caddis (sizes 18-20, )Little Black Stone (12-14), Grannom (12-14). For those of you who fish spinning tackle, I would suggest small jerk baits (such as Rapala X-Rap XR04's and XR06's), Yozuri Pin's Minnow, Blue Fox Vibrax Spinners (1/8oz - 3/16oz), Panther Martin Spinners (1/16oz - 1/4oz), 1/8oz Hus-Lures, 1/8oz Kast-masters, and 1/8oz Little Cleo's... almost all of which we have available in our store. For those of you who are locals - you may be aware of another hot lure for trout - the Niti-One, which is available from PCola's Lures (a small, locally owned company in St. Michael, PA). The Little Juniata has a healthy population of wild, naturally reproducing brown trout, so please be courteous in practicing catch and release (in fact, 13.5 miles of the Little Juniata River, from the bridge at Ironville, to its confluence with the Frankstown Branch near Petersburg, is regulated as All Tackle Catch and Release).
