The trout plants have been strong here this year. There have been a lot of good trout over 10 lbs. caught all over the lake this year so far. Most anglers choose shore fishing because these fish tend to hold to the shore lines during the early morning and evening hours. Utilizing spinners and spoons is a good way to find fish. Powerbait is also a must-have here, pick your colors and scents, Garlic is a good choice! This lake should be a great option through spring.

About

This small 400-acre lake is considered one of the best trout fishing lakes in California. Just a short drive from Sacramento or Stockton, it has its own hatchery nearby to stock trout into the lake directly.

Stocked often to keep the fish population viable for heavy pressure throughout the year, the angling from late September to May is the prime season.

The lake record is a 19.96-pound rainbow trout with many anglers working for large fish. Catfish

approaching 40 pounds have been caught in the deeper sections of the lake.

Anglers can catch limits of largemouth bass, bluegill, and sunfish that naturally reproduce in the lake.

Techniques & Tips

Catching record-sized trout takes a different approach than regular trout fishing. A baitcasting rod, with 15 to 20-pound braided line, and a fluorocarbon leader is the best method of attracting larger rainbow trout. Work large Red Devil or red and bold Five of Diamonds spoons at depths below 15 feet on a slow retrieve, or on a very slow troll during sunny conditions.

Big trout will hit on minnows, nightcrawlers, and lead head jigs with silver and black rubber minnows worked in an up-and-down slight jerking, slow retrieve. Fishing techniques similar to jigging for walleye can sometimes attract bigger trout.

Clear bobbers and flies work on a spinning rod and flyfishing while wading near the shore with dry flies can bring in good sized rainbows.

For bluegill and sunfish, bits of worm on a bobber with a small hook works great. Largemouth bass hang out in the shallow water near surface structure to feed, so poppers, buzz bait, and crankbaits will get their attention.
