Steelhead fishing has been solid since the opener. Most shore anglers are using 1/3- 2/5 oz little cleo spoons, as well as drifting/floating soft beads, roe, or night crawlers.

About

A diverse array of species makes the American River a heavily fished area east of Sacramento, California.

The river stretches into the Sierra Nevada Mountains west of Reno, Nevada, and gets heavy pressure for rainbow, and brown trout, King salmon, Coho salmon, and steelhead. Striped bass, American shad, carp, and Sacramento sucker inhabit this clean, fast-running river as it joins the North, Middle, and South Forks before reaching the Sacramento River.

The American River is fed by the melting snowpack of the Sierra Nevada range.

Techniques & Tips

Considered an anglers paradise just a few miles from heavily populated urban areas, there is almost no limit to the styles of fishing that can bring home a limit.

Fishing from shore is the most popular method with a few anglers wading into the shallower sections of the river. Casting with heavier 10 to 12-pound monofilament on spinning reels attached to seven-foot or longer rods allow long casts with larger Rapalas, or four-inch or longer spoons for Coho, King, and Steelhead allows longer retrieves in the fast-moving current. Rainbow trout will hit on the same rigging with smaller-sized lures.

Brown trout hit best on minnows worked slowly along the bank near tree roots, rocks, and in back eddies where the water moves slower.

Strippers are as aggressive as largemouth bass and will hit on similar surface and shallow lures like jitterbugs and plastic worms.
