Cottonwood Reservoir: Water levels at Cottonwood Reservoir are slowly dropping and will continue to for the next several weeks. The ice sheet is sloping downward along the shoreline. Please use extreme caution. The inlet canal flows have slowed down, which has allowed the entire reservoir to freeze. The inlet area still has some flowing water, so please stay away from the direct area of inflow. Otherwise, the lake has 8-12 inches of ice with solid edges. Angler access from the parking area is fairly easy with the lake level so high. Wiper and tiger muskie are targets here with a possible black bullhead or fall-stocked, 10- to 12-inch rainbow trout. Both wiper and tiger muskie are difficult to catch through the ice, but this is the perfect place to try and catch both species if they're on your ice fishing bucket list. Just keep in mind, you will have to work for them! Please be aware the limit for wiper has changed statewide. You may harvest three wiper at Cottonwood per day, per angler with no size restriction. The Ouray Park board voted down a boat ramp at Cottonwood, so we will not be pursuing a boat ramp or any improved access at this time. The irrigation company has improved the road across from Cottonwood dam but, to prevent future damage, they have installed a gate across from the dam as well. Drive-in access across from the dam is longer allowed. Please be aware that this is a dam safety issue. You may still park your vehicle and walk or fish all along the dam. (March 09, 2023)
