Flows & Water: The Boise River is running with fairly strong flows and cold water temperatures, typical for December. High flows can make wading challenging, so be careful and stay aware of current strength and drop-offs if you choose to fish from the bank or wade. Water Clarity: Clear and cold water improves visibility but also can make fish more cautious. Weather: Cold winter weather with occasional cloud cover low light helps trigger insect and subsurface fish activity. Fly Fishing- Nymphing: This is currently the most productive method. Rig your leader with small midge and BWO nymphs (e.g., zebra midges or tiny pheasant-tail style patterns in sizes 1822), keep your drift tight, and fish seams and slower current pockets. Streamers: Early mornings and late evenings can produce strikes on small streamer patterns near structure where trout hold. Spin/Lure Fishing- Small Spoons & Marabou Jigs: Use light spoons or marabou jigs (1/16or 1/8 oz) worked slowly near deeper runs, holes, and behind structure a good option if fly fishing isn't your preference. Focus Deep: With cold water, fish tend to sit in deeper seams and slower runs. Let your lure sink before a slow retrieve to stay in the strike zone longer.
