Big Springs is a spring creek located in Newville PA. There is a 2 mile stretch of catch and release fly fishing only water that supports a great population of wild rainbow trout and brook trout. This stream probably gives you one of the best chances to catch a large wild rainbow or brook trout out of any other in PA, that is if you can fool them. These trout can spook easy, but using long leader and light tippet will help with that. Wild rainbows of over 20 inches, and native brook trout of up to 17 inches have been caught in the fly only section. Below the fly fishing section it turns to an all tackle section where you can fish with whatever you'd like. This section gets stocked yearly with rainbows and brook trout. Because of the springs flowing into the creek, the stream fishes great year round. Using midges is a great way to get these fish to the net. There are plenty of scuds and cress bugs in this stream as well, so matching those will catch fish. There are some blue winged olives in the spring and fall, and multiple species of caddis as well throughout the year.
