Target bass in the morning with top water frogs and around shallow structure with texas rigged soft plastics craws, and senkos.

About

Located about 50 miles west of Tucson, Arivaca Lake is small, just 90 acres with few amenities and only accessible via a rough, boulder-strewn road. It's hot in the summer months with temperatures exceeding 105 degrees and not much shade, but if youre after largemouth bass, catfish, or bluegill it's worth the effort to get here.

There are only vault-style toilets and one old-style boat ramp, and only electric motors are allowed on the lake.

This isnt a lake for everyone. The lack of amenities and travel problems getting to it keep a lot of people away. That means less pressure and more fish for those who brave the trip.

Techniques & Tips

Bobber fishing with just a bit of nightcrawler on a size eight or 10 hook can fill the hours on a hot summer afternoon when youve found the right depth for bluegill. Using light two to four-pound test monofilament, clinch on a small split shot, hook on your bait and start with the hook about four feet under the bobber. Adjust the depth accordingly until the action gets hot.

For catfish and a ball of nightcrawler wrapped around a size six or larger hook on a drop shot rig, or maybe just a couple of split shots about 24 inches above the hook should reach the bottom easily.

For bass, poppers, nightcrawlers, plastic worms, buzz bait, crankbait and plastic surface lures that look like frogs or mice will work when the largemouth bass come into the shallower water.
