Provided by Hubbard's Marina- The hogfish bite lately has been going really well for us. Were seeing those hogfish anywhere from around 30 to about 80 feet of water. The hogfish love live shrimp, thats definitely their go-to prey item. We see hogfish biting well on our five-hour half day, 10 hour all day, and our private fishing charters as well. The private fishing charters aboard the hub and flying hub two are great ways to really go after and target those hogfish easily and efficiently. However, you do have a great opportunity to target those hogfish on party boat trips too; its just a little bit more tricky on a party bow where were going after a variety of different species for a variety of different parties whereas on a private charter were more catering to one group and able to more easily dial into something like hogfish that is a more specialized fishery. When targeting hogfish we use three different methods either the ball jig method, the knocker rig method with beads, or will use our new banana jigs. Typically around 30-pound braided line is a good start with a 15 to 20-foot piece of 30-pound fluorocarbon top shot. Were also seeing good action on lane snapper near shore. The lane snapper bite has been super good in our nearshore and offshore waters anywhere from about 60 foot of water up to as deep as 180 foot were seeing active and prolific lane snapper. Lane snapper love live shrimp but theyll bite anything from squid to cut thread fins and more. Red grouper action is going well near shore for us this time of year too. Red grouper typically are most commonly found anywhere from 70 to 100 foot of water. We do catch them in shallower waters, but most of the time theyre going to be undersized or smaller when fishing shallower than 70 foot of water. You can find keeper fish shallower but a lot of smaller fish have to be sorted through before you can get that keeper size red grouper in shallower water. Most of the time; keeper red grouper are going to be more common once we get closer to 100 foot or more of water and beyond. Red grouper love live bait like pin fish, pig fish, squirrelfish and other live bait options. We also catch them often on thread fins, sardines and other big dead baits like cut pieces of Bonita. Mangrove snapper are around near shore, and were seeing some nice mangrove snapper anywhere from about 50 foot of water up to 100 foot, which is our deepest near shore area. Mangrove snapper typically like live shrimp or cut pieces of threadfin on double Snell rigs.
