Fishing forecast (December through February): Strawberry Reservoir typically has open water through the first half of December, and the road to the Strawberry Marina (FR-131 and FR-452), as well as the road to Soldier Creek Dam (FR-090) typically remain open for angler access to those areas. Boat and float tube anglers typically do well targeting the upper water column (surface - 15 feet deep). Both slow drift trolling (1 to 1.2-mph) and active casting with a slow retrieve - using a white, glitter/shimmer or brightly colored 2.5 to 3.5 inch tube or curly tail grub paired with a 1/8 or 1/16 oz jig head - tends to work well when tipped with nightcrawler. Shore anglers also tend to do well fishing the mornings and late afternoons using white tube jigs and streamers. We recommend fishing tube jigs behind a casting bubble or using a slip float (slip bobber) rig to increase casting distance and allow anglers to fish more water. Ice begins to form on both sides of the reservoir early to mid-December, with fishable ice (ice that's at least 4-inches thick) typically present in the bays right around Christmas. By January, average ice thickness is 6- to 8-inches. By February, average ice thickness is 12+ inches. Slush tends to become an issue toward the later part of February. DWR fall stocking of catchable size Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat Trout in October and November should help provide good fishing through winter. White or glow pattern 1.5" to 3.5" plastic tubes paired with a 1/8 or 1/16-ounce jig head, tipped with nightcrawler, wax worm, chub meat, salad shrimp, or trout dough bait typically works well for both Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat Trout through the ice. We recommend targeting shallower water in the mornings (6' to 12'), and deeper water midday into the afternoon/evening (20' to 50'). Kokanee Salmon can also be targeted through the ice, but can be challenging without electronics. We recommend targeting deep water (40" to 60" water column), and using a flasher or fish finder to better intercept schools as they swim through. Actively jigging small glow-pink or glow-white tube jigs, spoons, or hoochies/squids fished below a 3- to 4-inch flasher tends to work well - when tipped with meal worm or maggot.
