Sand Wash

Rating - Fair

Tuesday, Oct 19 2021
Water levels at Big Sandwash are 11% and dropping. The courtesy dock has been taken out and the water level is below the bottom of the boat ramp. There is a great deal of debris and mud on the concrete at the very bottom, but small boats can still launch. Water temperatures are cooling off and around the mid-60s, depending of time of day. Angler use has been minimal the past few weeks. Fishing for bass has been fairly slow. Smallmouth can generally be found on most of the mid-lake points, rock ledges and along the cobbles of the dam. Rainbow trout fishing has been good with anglers catching their limits of 14- to 20-inch fish on various methods. As the water warms, rainbow trout will move into the deeper, cooler waters. A harmful algal bloom has been confirmed, so please minimize your contact with the water. When harvesting fish from this waterbody, clean the filets well and remove all organ tissue. If you plan to fish Big Sandwash this year and target the small walleye, please plan to keep your limit of this species (limit is 10 walleye with 1 over 24 inches). We are seeing a large cohort of small 12- to 14-inch walleye, which are all diploid fish and are likely offspring from the illegal introduction of this species five to six years ago. Keeping this top predator in lower numbers at the reservoir will help the rest of the fishery. Stocking of triploid walleye fry for a longer term "swamping" effort will continue, however swamping using triploid fish is a long-term process (10 to 20 years most likely).
