John Crotty of Almanor Fishing Adventures reported a good early morning bite at Red Bank, but it ends early. The deeper areas of the lake and over springs such as the A-Frame, Big Springs, Dorado, and Rec 1 are also holding fish, but the bite has been short and early with the best action on the anchor with nightcrawlers, plastic worms, or the Almanor Cocktail. Hamilton Branch is the best location for bank fishermen and will remain the preferred destination for shore anglers until the weather cools down. The lake dropped slightly to 80 percent.

About

Canyon Dam on the North Fork of the Feather River created a reservoir filled with rainbow trout, brown trout, king salmon, crappie, and smallmouth bass. The trout can reach 10 pounds and Lake Almanor is considered one of the best lakes in California to find large trout.

The lake is 90 feet deep but tapers up both sides with shallow shoulders where bass and crappie can be found.

The tributaries including Last Chance Creek, Hamilton Brank, and Benner Creek along with drainage from several natural springs bring food into the reservoir and are great places to fish for all species.

Techniques & Tips

Located near Chico, California the weather is hot in the summer months exceeding 100 degrees at times and the fish will go deeper to find colder bands of water. Nightcrawlers set on number six or larger hooks at a depth of 10 to 30 feet work well in warm weather.

Several floating docks offer good fishing for crappie with worms and red-colored jigs worked under and nearby the shadows created by the docks.

Spinners work on clear, sunny days for trout and salmon, as do brightly colored red and white spoons, or bright gold and silver spoons.

Flies work throughout the year with wet flies in the winter months and dry flies when the insects are flying above the water.
