The region has received more than twenty feet of snow this winter with reports of excess of twenty-two feet on the west shore. Another winter storm warning is in effect beginning Monday night lasting through Wednesday with chances of additional snow through Friday. Trolling has been difficult at best as bank fishermen stand a better chance of catching fish. Conditions at the branch have improved and the coves around the dam are producing fish. The water temperatures remain in the mid-thirties, and the fish are not anxious to play. The snow at lake level is beginning to melt, but the Hamilton Branch is depositing large volumes of dirty water and Bayley Creek is also seeing an increase in runoff. In addition, with the rising water levels, there are some new navigational hazards popping up, as lake level rises to multiyear highs you can expect to see debris throughout the lake. The fish are scattered and lethargic and not anxious to play. Water temperatures need to rise before fishing picks up. Shore fishermen are searching for clear water as Hamilton Branch has been unfishable and there is lots of muddy water flowing into the lake along the shoreline. Travel into Plumas County has been challenging, and the roadways have taken a beating this winter with lots of potholes with a few crater-sized holes. The lake rose to 65 percent.

About

Canyon Dam on the North Fork of the Feather River created a reservoir filled with rainbow trout, brown trout, king salmon, crappie, and smallmouth bass. The trout can reach 10 pounds and Lake Almanor is considered one of the best lakes in California to find large trout.

The lake is 90 feet deep but tapers up both sides with shallow shoulders where bass and crappie can be found.

The tributaries including Last Chance Creek, Hamilton Brank, and Benner Creek along with drainage from several natural springs bring food into the reservoir and are great places to fish for all species.

Techniques & Tips

Located near Chico, California the weather is hot in the summer months exceeding 100 degrees at times and the fish will go deeper to find colder bands of water. Nightcrawlers set on number six or larger hooks at a depth of 10 to 30 feet work well in warm weather.

Several floating docks offer good fishing for crappie with worms and red-colored jigs worked under and nearby the shadows created by the docks.

Spinners work on clear, sunny days for trout and salmon, as do brightly colored red and white spoons, or bright gold and silver spoons.

Flies work throughout the year with wet flies in the winter months and dry flies when the insects are flying above the water.
