Cheat Lake near Morgantown. November through March daily water levels can fluctuate 13 feet. Boaters can use the boat ramp near Cheat Lake dam. Cheat Lake is home to many species of fish.Walleye are becoming more abundant with fish being seen up to and beyond 30-inches. Walleye tend to congregate from Canyon to Ices Ferry. Walleye in winter as they congregate in the tailwater area just below the dam. Spoons are very popular winter walleye lures. Yellow Perch can be found around, Sunset and Ices Ferry areas of the lake. It is a three to five-mile boat ride from the winter ramp to these areas. Use tiny jigging spoons and small jigs tipped with wax worms.Channel Catfish can move to depths of 50 feet or more just off the fishing piers at Cheat Lake park. Though Channel Catfish move to overwintering holes, they feed throughout the winter and simply using nightcrawlers baited on a hook with a 2-ounce sinker can be effective. Chicken liver is also a great bait.
