Try Mepps, Panther Martins, or your favorite spinner. Fly fishermen try midges, beadhead nymphs, or wooly buggers.

About

Just a few miles west of Pocatello with easy access on Interstate 86, American Falls is the largest reservoir on the snake river. The lake has 100 miles of shoreline and an area of 56,000 acres when full. Anglers should note that the reservoir varies greatly in size since its usage is primarily for agriculture and the level drops by late summer.

This is a prime rainbow trout fishery but home to many other species as well including brown and cutthroat trout, crappie, yellow perch, white fish, bullhead, and channel catfish.

The lake offers easy boat access via three well-maintained docks and is popular year-round.

Techniques & Tips

Large reservoirs on western rivers offer a wide variety of fishing techniques. Rainbow trout are the most popular fish in this lake. Rainbows and the native cutthroat trout can be taken on dry flies that match the hatch during the late spring and summer months. Wet flies in the fall worked just below the surface and spinners and spoons on any sunny day. Youll catch whitefish with the same technique if you find a school of them.

Brown trout are more elusive but will hit softly on minnows and nightcrawlers worked with the current into cut banks and near fallen logs and tree roots.

Crappie and perch hit on jigs, and live bait. Red, bright orange, and chartreuse colors work well on bright days.

Bullheads and channel catfish hit worms, nightcrawlers, dough balls, stink bait and chunks of raw liver drifted along the bottom.
