Badger Slough

Rating - Fair

Wednesday, Sep 21 2022
Grayling being caught on white dry flies and small spinners, Rainbows are scarce but can be caught using rooster tails and white grubs.

About

Melting permafrost fills the Badger Slough each spring beginning around April. The seasonal runoff breaks the ice covering and invites Arctic grayling to spawn. This slough is a favorite of early summer anglers in the Fairbanks and North Pole communities.

The best fishing is often when the banks are still lined with ice in April.

The slough is accessible along its short run, but much of it goes through private property.

Techniques & Tips

Grayling are nibblers with soft mouths. If you try to fish for them as you do for trout, it will be a long day with few grayling caught.

They nibble at bugs and will do the same on a fly that matches the tremendous number of insects that come in Alaska. Patience is your best attribute with grayling. Keep working the fly and timing the set and eventually, you¿ll hook one. Don¿t ¿horse¿ it or you¿ll rip the mouth, injuring the fish and losing it.

For spinning reels, use light two to four-pound test monofilament with salmon eggs, or small minnows in the deepest sections of the slough.
