Silvers are abundant, few kings left. Trolling with large flashers and hoochies, Mooching can also be productive.

About

The Gastineau Strait, a long, narrow, stretch of saltwater separates Juneau from Douglas, Island.

Connected by a single bridge across the strait the back, or eastern side of the island offers ample shoreline for salmon fishing from shore, and protection from ocean waves and Arctic winds through the summer.

Most often this area is fished from boats, both large and small. There are ample salmon runs along both sides of the strait with coho, pink, chum and king all making seasonal runs. Halibut fishing is one of the more popular species to fish.

The strait is heavily fished during the summer runs and during seasonal salmon runs.

Techniques & Tips

Herring trolled behind a flasher or cast from shore with small weights attached are the most popular methods of catching king salmon.

Anglers using large spinners and spoons often hook them in sequence behind a flasher.

Trolling hoochies is popular all along the strait.

Fresh herring, geoduck clams and fresh squid are the best halibut baits when fished off the bottom. Squid jigs worked along the bottom with drop shot rigs are a good option as well.
