Open to Hatchery Cohos. Trolling spoons or hootchies 40-100 feet down is the go to method. Closed to crabbing

About

The Tacoma Narrows bridge marks the northern boundary of Marine Area 13 on South Puget Sound. The magic of this stretch of the sound is the protection provided by the high cliff walls on both sides of the area.

This provides cover for small fishing boats from the Pacific winds. There are ample fishing opportunities from shore with open sections of beach, and piers. This is the only area in

Washington open to salmon fishing all 12 months of the year.

During odd years a pink salmon season is open from July to early September.

Winter Chinook salmon, often called Blackmouth, usually has a season from October through April.

Coastal cutthroat trout are heavily fished in this area.

Techniques & Tips

If you own a small boat that isn¿t powerful enough to brave the choppy seas and high winds of the Pacific Coast, but still want to do some saltwater fishing, Area 13 is a great choice.

Fish for salmon using large Rapalas trolled behind your boat, with secondary choices of green spoons, chartreuse, or green spinners size four or above and you should have luck.

Live bait works well on trolling rigs, with minnows hooked in the lip trolled at a slow speed with weights attached. Cowbell rigs are worth a try with one or two minnows hooked behind the array at a slow troll.

Downriggers with live bait are an option, dropped to the depth you find salmon hovering at in your fish finder.

The weather is a big factor in Area 13 since you can fish year-round. Sunny summer conditions vary greatly from the squalls of November to March, but the low pressure that comes with these squalls is often the best time to fish.
