About
Antero Reservoir is below the first dam below the continental divide on the Middle Fork of the South Platte River. This is a shallow reservoir located at 9,000 feet elevation. This is a popular area for shore fishing and a boat ramp allows access to the 2,500-acre reservoir.
Its high altitude allows the lake to freeze earlier than lower-level lakes and ice fishing is popular through the winter months.
Native cutthroat, and stocked rainbow and brown trout grow to great size feeding on a high population of scud shrimp.
Techniques & Tips
Flyfishing from shore and even flyfishing from a boat when the hatch is heavy are good fishing methods for cutthroat and rainbow trout. Match the hatch from June to late August with dry flies worked just offshore for the best effect. All three species of trout will hit on nightcrawlers and leeches when properly presented. Brown trout prefer bait at lower depths while cutthroat and rainbow will strike on jigs, spinners, and spoons.
Trolling for rainbows is popular using bright blade spinners and spoons with the trolling motor set to a lower speed.
