Check regs and emergency orders for openings. Road to the beach is flooded No new reports

About

Accessibility and an abundant supply of steelhead and salmon make this a popular fishing destination.

This is the only steelhead fishery in Alaska you can reach by road. Fishing is seasonal with the steelhead runs occurring between August and November.

King salmon bring the most attention during their run from late May to mid-June each year.

Silver salmon run up the river from late July until Labor Day and pink salmon start a week or two earlier than silver with the run climaxing in August.

There are fishing holes posted along a two-mile-long section of the river than can be driven to on Anchor River Road.

Techniques & Tips

Most anglers are after king salmon, and they are the hardest to catch. Kings run in the deepest part of the river but will hit on flies at times during the day. Use big, bright-colored flies and let them drift with the current. Kings dont strike hard so watching your line is key.

You can use large chartreuse or neon lures like Vibrax in size six. Roe works well and herring attract kings near the ocean.

Bottom bouncing and bobber fishing work with kings too.

If youre after silver salmon work the clear shallower areas of the river with bait, lures, and flies similar to those used for kings.

Smaller spinners and spoons work for steelhead. Theyll hit on wet files and dry flies that match the hatch along with streamers and nymphs.
