American Fork Creek
Rating - Fair
Friday, Jan 06 2023
Fishing forecast (December through February): American Fork Creek normally remains fishable from the canyon toll booth upstream to the Tibble Fork dam spillway. The main road to Tibble Fork Reservoir, as well as the reservoir's parking lot, are normally plowed during the winter. However, snow accumulations in shoulder pull-off areas and non-plowed day-use parking lot areas may require walking some distance to access a desired section of stream. The creek's heavy brush cover and its tendency to accumulate large drifts and snow banks can make fishing difficult in areas.Trout fishing should be fair for anglers willing to wade the cold water. We recommend using small nymph fly patterns or worm patterns fished slow and deep using tightline nymphing techniques or a strike indicator. We also recommend using darker, duller-colored flies, such as black, tan, brown and dark green. Anglers should expect to catch a mix of trout species, including brown trout, rainbow trout and cutthroat trout. (Dec. 9, 2022)
About
This is a classic western trout stream with fast-moving water cascading over boulders, sections of smooth gravel beds, and filled with cut banks, pools, and eddies that create excellent trout habitat. The challenge is the heavy brush that lines the banks of American Fork Creek. It is a challenge to get a fly or small lure into the water with all the underbrush and trees lining the bank, but it can be done. If youre a novice expect to get snagged a few times on casts due to the heavy cover.
The stream varies from five to 20 feet wide and has a good population of rainbow and brown trout.
Techniques & Tips
Getting your line to the fish is the biggest challenge in this stream. Shorter rods, shorter casts, and close examination of the shoreline that allows you to float a fly with the current rather than work it into place are the best methods of getting a fly or small Panther Martin or Roostertail into the water.Nymphs work well on this creek. Double Renegade, Brookes Stone Fly, and Matts Fur Nymph are local favorites.
As always, matching the hatch is the key to catching trout in late spring and through the summer months.
