Fishing for trout was good when using chunky cheese PowerBait, Velveeta cheese, and black Pistol Pete spinner flies. Fishing for bass was fair to good when using gold, gray and green streamer flies.

About

The Alumni Pond on the New Mexico State University campus features good fishing right in town. Rainbow trout, channel catfish, and largemouth bass are the most popular species, but sunfish, smallmouth bass, and carp are taken there as well.

The pond has different limits by species and these limits can change. Check current regulations before you put a line in the water.

Trout are stocked during the winter and channel catfish during the warmer months for year-round action.

The pond is easily accessible, located next to the Pan-American Center.

Techniques & Tips

Most of the fish caught in the Alumni Pond are stocked. Catfish will strike on worms, nightcrawlers, stink bait, and even chunks of hotdogs. The best method is to hook your bait on a number six hook, clinch on a couple of mid-sized sinkers, and fish off the bottom. You can use a drop shot rig too, but there isnt much bottom structure to worry about.

For trout, salmon eggs and power bait work since these fish are hatchery raised. They will hit on jigs, spinners, spoons, and nightcrawlers. Use light tackle on a spin cast or spinning reel and work lures at four to six feet depth with a fast retrieve. Bobber fishing with worms works, as does a lightweight sinker attached to a number six or larger hook, and slowly retrieve so it doesnt catch the bottom.

Stocked trout dont hit as well on flies and wild varieties, but if theyre surface feeding, match your fly with the hatch and youll have success.
