Trout fishing is open, so check out the cutthroat throughout the basin. Fish are moving and jumping throughout the basin, and sea-runs have started to pick up in the past two weeks and spread throughout the basin.Fall Chinook is open on the Alsea, though it's still early in the season. You may be able to get a fish in the bay this early before they start to move back into the system to spawn. We've heard of the first few fish being caught in the bay and out towards the jaws this week.
About
The Alsea River is just 48 miles long and follows Oregon Highway 34 for most of its length.Beginning in the mountains of the Central Oregon Coastal Range. There are two forks of the Alsea, the North and the South that join and are accessible through the Siuslaw National Forest.
The Alsea flows directly into the Pacific and is a good steelhead fishery.
Techniques & Tips
You can find trout in the Alsea but the river is known for Steelhead and most anglers throw their entire tackle box of lures are these fish, often with good results. The North Fork has a lot of shoulders and banks along the shoreline. Drift boat fishing, spinners, and surface jigs work here. Steelhead with hit on plastic worms worked through the current and are often caught on a simpler worm and bobber rig in slower moving sections of water.
This is not a wide river and diminishes late in the summer. Smaller lures work well here and on sunny days darker lures often catch more steelhead than bright shiny spinners and spoons.
Steelhead will hit on streamers, and dry flies at different times through the year.
