WILSON RIVER: Summer steelhead; cutthroat troutThe Wilson gets a run of hatchery summer steelhead and there should be a few throughout the basin and more coming in this month. Low clear water will make catching them a challenge. For those anglers set on getting into a summer steelhead, fish early morning and cover lots of water including deep holes, pocket water, and drifts with some chop to them. Light line, subtle terminal presentations like beads, jigs, or small natural baits and hardware like spinners and spoons should all produce fish. There are no spring Chinook releases on the Wilson.Trout season opened on the Wilson on May 22nd. The Wilson tends to be a little slower for coastal cutthroat trout than some of the neighboring basins, but there are trout throughout the fishery and lots of public access off of Hwy 6. The low clear water can make fishing a little challenging, but cutthroat are aggressive biters so use light line and stealthy tactics, concentrate on deep pools with cover, and you should find success. Many areas have bait restrictions in place so check the regulations for those and open areas before heading out.Last updated 6/9/25.

About

The Alsea River is just 48 miles long and follows Oregon Highway 34 for most of its length.

Beginning in the mountains of the Central Oregon Coastal Range. There are two forks of the Alsea, the North and the South that join and are accessible through the Siuslaw National Forest.

The Alsea flows directly into the Pacific and is a good steelhead fishery.

Techniques & Tips

You can find trout in the Alsea but the river is known for Steelhead and most anglers throw their entire tackle box of lures are these fish, often with good results.

The North Fork has a lot of shoulders and banks along the shoreline. Drift boat fishing, spinners, and surface jigs work here. Steelhead with hit on plastic worms worked through the current and are often caught on a simpler worm and bobber rig in slower moving sections of water.

This is not a wide river and diminishes late in the summer. Smaller lures work well here and on sunny days darker lures often catch more steelhead than bright shiny spinners and spoons.

Steelhead will hit on streamers, and dry flies at different times through the year.
