About
The river drains in Albuquerque provide access to good populations of rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and carp. These drains are all connected and flow year-round, offering open water fishing 12 months a year.Access to the drains can be difficult. These public access areas have a lot of fishing pressure.
The drains are concrete flowing through residential, business, and industrial areas of the city. The underpasses below major highways are good spots to fish.
Techniques & Tips
Structure in the drains can vary from smooth concreted to heavy rocks, lodged trees, and backed-up slower water. Most of the drains flow quickly.Shallow running spinners and bright-colored spoons are best for trout. Silver Fox and bright Panther Martin spinners, along with Five-of-Diamond, and dimpled gold spoons work well.
Carp will hit on worms or nightcrawlers bounced along the bottom. With heavy structure, drop shot rigging works best to avoid getting snagged.
Bass are surface feeders but with concrete banks, there are no shrubs or cattails to work. Subsurface buzz baits and plastic rooms work best.
