Fishing forecast (March through May): The reservoir is usually ice-free by mid-to-late March. Rainbow trout begin patrolling the shorelines looking for food and a place to spawn as soon as the ice comes off, and can provide great fishing throughout April and May. Many anglers fish with nymphs, but streamers, balanced leeches and midge drys can also produce well. Spin anglers can catch rainbow trout with marabou jigs, spinners, spoons and unscented plastics. Wiper also start to become more active and typically seek out the warmest water in the shallows. For wiper, use lures and flies that imitate chubs and crayfish. As spring progresses into May, trout will feed actively on the surface during mornings and evenings, but move into deeper water during the day. Smallmouth bass will also become more active during late spring, and wipers will become more nocturnal.

Trout fishing should start to improve with cooling water temperatures. Some trout can be caught trolling in deep water. Also look for hatches in the early morning and late evening. Smallmouth bass are active and can be caught on crayfish-imitating tackle. Wipers are most active at sunup or sundown and can be caught trolling or casting topwater lures. Wipers are also doing fantastic, with 4- to 6-pound fish abundant. We also saw a few larger wipers, up to 8 pounds.Click here to unsubcribe from your fishing reports.
