Good bite for trout, they can be found from the surface to 20 feet from in front of Millers Landing to the Forks with Dicks Trout Busters, Mountain Tubes, or Bomber Hoochies tipped with a maggot behind a Dicks Bluefin Mountain Dodger. The water temperature is 51 degrees, and once it warms up a few degrees, the bite will continue to improve. Bass bite remains slow with the weather but will improve as warmer days come.

About

Located just 20 miles south of the entrance to Yosemite National Park, Bass Lake is inside the Sierra National Forest so additional permitting is required.

The 1,170-acre lake is well stocked with rainbow trout, kokanee, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish.

Motorboats are allowed on the lake but there is a five-mile-per-hour limit on the lake until 8 am and then later in the evening to accommodate anglers.

This is a popular lake for jet skis, water skiers, and recreational boats, so trolling can be a challenge with the frequent wakes during the day.

The shoreline offers a wide variety of docks, piers, and natural outcroppings for the shore angler.

Techniques & Tips

If youre after the solitude and quiet that comes with fishing, get there early in the morning just before sunrise. Youll find the best fishing of the day for trout on spinners, worms, and Powerbait before the lake gets busy.

Later in the day, bottom fishing for catfish with stink bait, liver, or balls of bread is often good. Use a large hook and heavier weight braided line for cats.

Kokanee require a little more work than trout, but spinners and spoons of moderate size on sunny days will get strikes.

Bluegill and crappie are nesting fish, best jigged for after finding them on a fish finder. Stationary fishing from a boat with monofilament line, worms on size eight to size 10 hooks, or 1/8th ounce lead head jigs with rubber minnows works well.
